//www.rungemortuary.com" >www.rungemortuary.com. Jim was born to Homer and Edith (Denning) Appleby on August 11, 1937, the youngest of nine siblings. He was united in marriage to Frances Virginia Hughes, on May 6, 1960 in Bettendorf, Iowa and they remained happily married for over 57 years. In 2002, he retired from the City of Davenport, after 35 years of dedicated service. Becoming restless shortly into his retirement, he decided to take on the role of Crossing Guard and come rain or shine, he was there to cross the children of McKinley Elementary, including some of his very own great grandchildren! As a lover of the outdoors and spending time with his family, some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, camping, gardening and amusement park vacations. When you could get him to sit still, he's enjoyed watching westerns, wrestling and NASCAR. Blessed with the gift of gab, Jim never met a stranger. An avid and enthusiastic story teller, he always knew how to keep the conversation going and people smiling. His wife loved watching him be the life of parties, family gatherings and even sometimes, just the super market checkout line! Those remaining to celebrate his life and take their turn telling his stories, include his loving wife Frances; his children: Tina (Johnny) Flowers; Chuck (Melissa) Appleby, Jr.; Tiffney (Corey) Gasper, Crystal (Wally) Henkel; (grand)children Kevin (Emily) Honaker, Breann Appleby, Bailey Appleby, 9 (great)grandchildren and many extended family and friends made throughout the years. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings. Memorials can be made to the family.
